A compact spare, also called a T-type, space-saver, or donut, is a high-pressure temporary tire built to FMVSS No. 109. FMVSS No. 139 states that it does not apply to “T-type temporary use spare tires with radial construction.” Chrysler’s 2023 300 owner’s manual tells the driver how to read that class: compact-spare descriptions on the Tire and Loading Information Placard, or on the tire, begin with T or S. The example is T145/80D18 103M. FMVSS No. 109, S4.3.5, requires any tire whose maximum inflation is 420 kPa (60 psi) to carry “Inflate to 420 kPa (60 psi)” on both sidewalls in letters not less than 12.7 mm (½ inch) high.
A matching full-size spare repeats the road-tire size, load index, and speed symbol. It does not start with T. USTMA’s Care and Service of Passenger and Light Truck Tires (2017) puts a matching full-size spare in the rotation pattern and leaves a T-type spare out of it.
A run-flat is a road tire with a reinforced sidewall, not a trunk spare. UNECE Regulation No. 64 describes a run-flat as still supplying basic tyre functions at 80 km/h (50 mph) for 80 km after air loss. ISO 16992 uses the same pair as the extended-mobility test point. The sidewall may show RF, RFT, RSC, or an F in front of the rim diameter.
What speed and pressure are printed on a spare sidewall?
The speed that binds a non-pneumatic spare is federal text. The speed symbol on a T-type spare is easy to misread as permission. Maxxis’s compact-spare spec sheet lists T125/70D17 98M with a maximum speed of 81 mph, the ISO 4000-1 value for symbol M (130 km/h). Honda’s Civic still says keep the vehicle under 50 mph on that tire.
Cold inflation belongs on the tire before the car moves. USTMA’s 2017 care manual states that T-type temporary spare tires require 60 psi (420 kPa), and that spare pressure should be checked monthly with an accurate gauge. Honda’s 2024 Civic manual repeats 60 psi. Toyo splits the two constructions: 60 psi for the T-type, 35 psi for a temporary full-size spare.
Why 50 miles is not a federal spare-tire limit
FMVSS No. 109’s endurance test for T-type tires runs at 80 km/h (50 mph) for 34 hours at stepped loads. That is a laboratory schedule, not a permission to drive 50 miles. The federal spare-tire speed consumers see, 50 mph, comes from FMVSS No. 110’s non-pneumatic marking and from owner’s manuals. A federal spare-tire distance marking for T-type pneumatic tires is not in those sections.
That is why the 50-mile figure and the 50 mph figure do not travel together in every book. Consumer pages collapse those books into one pair. Kelley Blue Book’s May 21, 2025 spare-tire article tells drivers to follow a “50-50 rule of thumb”: less than 50 miles, under 50 mph. AutoZone widens the distance to “50 to 70 miles.” Those outlets are describing a common compact-spare envelope, not FMVSS No. 109’s labeling list.
Ian McKenney, senior product manager at Bridgestone Americas, put the compact-spare envelope in one sentence for Good Housekeeping: “Abide by the 50/50 rule: travel no more than 50 miles at speeds under 50 mph.” That is Bridgestone’s product language for a donut. Driving a compact spare until the tread looks worn is a trap. Maxxis’s T125/80D16 97M compact spare ships with 4/32 inch of tread. FMVSS No. 109 requires a tread-wear indicator at 1.6 mm (1/16 inch), which is 2/32 inch. Honda’s Civic book says replace the compact spare when those bars appear.
What spare age, load index, tread depth, and AWD mismatch do to the trip
Age is a DOT code, not a visual judgment. 49 CFR 574.5 requires a four-digit date code as the last group of the Tire Identification Number: week, then year. Michelin’s FAQ uses 2218 as the example, the 22nd week of 2018. Load index is the number after the size. Honda’s T125/80D16 97M compact spare is load index 97. Maxxis publishes that size at a maximum load of 1,609 lb at 60 psi. The Civic’s 215/50R17 91H road tire is load index 91. The spare carries the same corner on a narrower section, which is why inflation is 60 psi instead of the Civic’s 32–33 psi road-tire placard.
Diameter is the AWD problem hiding under the speed debate. Maxxis lists T125/80D16 at 22.9 inches overall diameter. The ISO size formula for 215/50R17, the Civic’s 17-inch road tire, is about 25.5 inches overall. Subaru of America’s December 2010 TechTips article told dealers that all four tires should be “within approximately ¼" of each other in circumference when measured at the center of the tread.” A T-type donut that is roughly 2.5 inches shorter in overall diameter is many times that allowance.
